Formula Student is an engineering challenge where students from different universities around the globe design and build a single-seater open-wheel race car with which they can compete against teams from all over the world. The competition is not won solely by the team with the fastest car, but rather by the team with the best overall package of construction, performance, and financial and sales planning. It is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, transitioning them from university to the workplace. Formula Student challenges the team members to go the extra step in their education by incorporating into it intensive experience in building and manufacturing as well as considering the economic aspects of the automotive industry


 The COMBUSTION category consists of vehicles that are powered by internal combustion engines. It is the oldest category, and is the starting point for all FS teams seeking to make an entry into the world of FS

 The  ELECTRIC  category consists of vehicles that are powered by battery packs and electric motors. Following the global shift towards electric mobility, many teams, including us, have shifted to the electric category.

The  DRIVERLESS  category consists of vehicles that are autonomous and perform all physical actions on its own. Being relatively new, participation in this category is comparatively lower but is rapidly gaining popularity.



International flair, more than 100 race cars, and competition at a feverish pace: That is the Formula Student Germany, a competition where student teams from around the world compete against each other in various disciplines with their self-constructed race cars. Viewed by the FS community as the pinnacle of all Formula Student Competitions, FSG takes place at the end of the FS calendar and provides a grand finale for the best teams from every country to vie for the championship.

Formula Bharat is the Indian Formula Student-style engineering design competition, featuring students from colleges and universities all over the country, with every team giving their absolute best to compete for the coveted title of national champions.

During the Skid Pad event, the cars must drive a figure of 8 circuit lined with track cones, performing two laps of each circle. In each case, the sec-ond lap will be measured. The lap time gives a comparative value for the maximum possible lateral acceleration of the car.

The efficiency score of a car is based on the distance the vehicle travels in the endurance event and the total fuel/energy used.\ category.

 In the AUTOCROSS event, the FSC and FSE cars traverse a kilometre-long track with driver and a 500 meter track  without driver including straights, curves, and chicanes. A fast lap time is a sign of high driving dynamics, precise handling and good acceleration and braking ability.


The vehicle‘s EFFICIENCY is measured precisely from fuel/electric power consumption. However, the absolute fuel and energy consumption is not what is used to calculate the efficiency score, but rather the consumption relative to speed.

The vehicle‘s ACCELERATION from a standing start is measured over a 75 metre straight. The fastest cars cross the line in less than four seconds and can reach speeds of over 100 km/h by the end of the stretch

The car is driven around the track for 22 km,  thus evaluating the car's ability to keep running for a long time (endurance over fatigue) 


The cars that the students design will not only be assessed when stationary. Their performance on the racetrack will also be put to the test.  Each dynamic event tests different features of the vehicles. In addition to the maximum longitudinal and lateral acceleration, race performance, efficiency and endurance of the Formula cars will be examined and evaluated.










The Formula Student competition is designed to introduce the participating students to the interdisciplinary approach of today’s automotive industry. This not only includes technical understanding, but also economic  and   communication   abilities  such  as  presentation  techniques  or financial planning skills. This is why the three static events demand collaboration across the team in the areas of design  and  layout,  construction,  marketing  and  pricing  of  a  product.

Cost is a decisive factor in the design of  any  product.  In  the  COST AND MANUFACTURING  analysis  event,  the  teams  must  grapple  with  the  calculative  size  of  the  vehicle,  its  components,  and  the  necessary  manufacturing steps and record all of this in  a  written  cost  report.  The  students  must  then  answer  questions  from  the  judges  relating  to  the  cost  report  on  their  prototype.

Each team engages in preparing a  BUSINESS PLAN PRESENTATION pitching their business  constructed over a idea which  involves a formula student car to a fictitious company represented by judges. During a ten minute presentation, the team must demonstrate why their design best fulfils the demands of their target group and show how their design can be successfully marketed. The presentation will be followed by a five minute discussion and question round with the judges.

For the ENGINEERING DESIGN COMPETITION,  the  students  must  hand  in an eight-page technical description of  their  car. The documents must  show  both  their  design  and  how  the  design  will  be  applied  to  their  chosen  construction. The evaluation will not only assess the quality of the technical solution  in  question  but  also  the  reasons behind it.

The objective of the COST AND MANUFACTURING event is to evaluate the team’s understanding of the manufacturing processes and costs associated with the construction of a prototype race car. This includes trade off decisions between content and cost, make or buy decisions and understanding the differences between prototype and mass production.
